Heineken Experience (brewery museum) | 020.amsterdam

Heineken has become one of the biggest breweries in the world. The production takes place in more than 140 breweries spread over 71 countries. Heineken was founded in 1863 by Gerard Adriaan Heineken. He bought his first brewery in 1864 and moved four years later to the new building at the corner of the Stadhouderskade and the Ferdinand Bolstraat.

The brewery in this building is not in use anymore. It is now used for the Heineken Experience. The visitors will be guided via an interactive tour and will learn more about the beer brand, the history and the brewing process.

The brewery building

Heineken's first build brewery is located in Amsterdam's city centre. The building has been functioned as a brewery till 1988. Due to the expansion of Heineken, the building became too small and there was a need of a more accessible location. After 120 years the production moved to Zoeterwoude. The former brewery building is now used for the Heineken Experience.

Brand name, abbreviation or not?

Want to learn some useless Dutch? There's no doubt that Heineken is the surname from the founder, but according to some Dutch people it's also an abbreviation for: < Hij En Ik Nemen Elke Keer Een Nieuwe >

Take your best shot and try to pronounce it correctly. It means, he and I takes a new one every time. The pronouncement could be replied with the reversed abbreviation: < Na Elke Keer Een Nieuwe Is Er Heineken >

It means that there's a new Heineken after every time.
