Brouwerij ’t IJ is one of Amsterdam’s most iconic craft breweries, famous for its distinctive beers and its unique location beside the historic windmill De Gooyer in the eastern part of the city. Founded in 1985, the brewery helped spark the revival of independent brewing in the Netherlands and has since become a must-visit destination for beer enthusiasts exploring Amsterdam.
The original tasting room, Proeflokaal De Molen, is located in a former bathhouse directly beneath the windmill. Here visitors can enjoy a wide selection of the brewery’s beers on tap, including well-known favourites such as the fruity Zatte Tripel, the refreshing IJwit, and their hoppy IPAs. The relaxed atmosphere, large communal tables, and sunny terrace make it a perfect place to experience Amsterdam’s modern beer culture.
In addition to the windmill location, Brouwerij ’t IJ operates two other popular venues in the city. Café Struis, just around the corner from the brewery, offers a cosy bar setting and is often used for events or group gatherings. The third location, ’t Blauwe Theehuis, can be found in the heart of the Vondelpark and combines the brewery’s beers with one of the most scenic terraces in Amsterdam.
