De Bierkoning is a renowned craft beer specialty shop located in the heart of Amsterdam. Despite its modest retail space of approximately 70 square meters—making it one of the smallest shops in the city—it is a true pilgrimage site for enthusiasts. De Bierkoning offers an impressive selection of over 1,500 different bottled beers, unique glassware, and specialized literature, attracting beer lovers from all over the world.
The shop's history dates back to 1985, a time when many small breweries had disappeared or were being acquired by large multinationals. Born from a desire for more variety and quality within the local squatters' movement, the shop started with the support of wholesaler Bierenco and began importing craft beers from Belgium.
Today, the resurgence of home brewing and the rise of independent microbreweries have transformed the market. This thriving Dutch beer culture is beautifully reflected in their ever-changing assortment, showcasing the best of local and international craftsmanship.
