Six monumental buildings

The Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam is located in six monumental buildings. These buildings are located in the Golden Bend of the Herengracht. This is a part of the Herengracht, were the houses are stately and richly decorated and designed, because they were build for wealthy and mighty people.

These six buildings were build in the years between 1665 and 1687 and were being used as single houses, double sided-mansions and also as a commercial building. Destinations changed during time and since 2014 it's being used as five star hotel, including two restaurants and an exclusive Spa.

About the Herengracht

The Herengracht, between the Singel and the Keizersgracht, is the second canal of the Amsterdam canal belt. In 1612, the canal Herengracht was named after the 'Heren regeerders', the Gentlemen's governors of the city of Amsterdam. The history goes back to 1585. The canal was located inside the city wall and was supposed to serve as a fortress canal for the companies behind the Singel and for a lost profession (ropery). In 1612 there was decided that the city needs to be expanded, to make more living space for their inhabitants and traders. The fortress canal was expanded and excavated to the current Herengracht.

Amsterdam became one of the most powerful cities of Europe. In the second half of the 17th century, the Herengracht was expanded. Many mansions were inhabited by wealthy traders and other powerful people. Some bought double sized building plots and placed the most beautiful houses on it. This part is also called the Golden bend, as there are numerous monumental buildings to be found on this part of the Herengracht.

Since 2010 the canals of Amsterdam are part of the UNESCO World Heritage. For everyone who loves or is just about to fall in love with the city of Amsterdam, Museum Het Grachtenhuis is given the visitors more information about the history of the canals and tells everyone why these are still special. Start your discovery tour in Museum Het Grachtenhuis, at Herengracht 386.
